Let’s start with the obvious: dessert makes everything better. Whether it’s a slice of ice cream cake, a plate of waffles or a scoop of ice cream, digging into a sweet treat is the easiest way to lift your mood. Money can’t buy you happiness, but it can buy you milkshakes, sundaes and soda floats. Dessert does a lot more than satisfy cravings; it puts a smile on your face, too.
When was the last time you stopped to think about the power of flashing your pearly whites? There’s actually good reason to smile whenever you can. Smiling improves your mood, makes you more attractive and helps you stay positive. But hands down, the best thing about smiling is how contagious it is. Smile and the world smiles back at you.
Milky Lane knows a thing or two about making people smile. We’ve been serving smiles and feelgood moments for over 60 years, which is all the proof you need that there’s always room for happiness (and dessert). So how does an ice cream parlour that’s been dishing out dessert and serving smiles for that long celebrate its 60th birthday? Not with a cake and candles, but by sharing the contagious power of a genuine grin.
Let’s backtrack a bit. The date is 16 May 2018, and Milky Lane has turned 60. More than 1000 pupils (1218 to be exact) are lined up on their school’s sports field, but they’re not there to watch a game. They’re there for something a lot more groundbreaking; to create the largest human image of a manmade smile. They’re not alone, though. Timekeepers, auditors and independent witnesses have also been roped in to make sure the necessary guidelines are followed.
Now let’s fast forward to the present day. Four years later and Milky Lane still holds the record for the world’s largest manmade smile, although we prefer to call it the world’s biggest smile. You might be wondering why anyone would want to set a world record in the first place. Bragging rights? Boredom?
A combination of both? In our case, the answer is neither.
No one can deny the appeal of being declared officially amazing, but a world record just confirms what plenty of people have known to be true for over 60 years: that no one puts a smile on your face faster than Milky Lane. Creating the biggest manmade smile is not that different to what we do every day.
