The Smile Foundation was founded on the wishes of the late, great Nelson Mandela. He wished that children with facial anomalies would get access and funding for the reconstructive surgeries they needed, as well as for the public to be educated so that they would not stigmatise these children for being different. The plight of children living with facial anomalies was brought to Madiba’s attention through a letter written by Thando’s mother.
Little Thando was born with a rare condition called Moebius Syndrome, which causes partial or complete facial paralysis. A person with this syndrome has difficulty smiling, talking, chewing, and swallowing food. Thando’s mother wanted a better life for her daughter so she persisted in looking for someone to help her little girl smile. And her persistence paid off. Not only did Thando get the support, help and care she needed, but her mother’s actions laid the groundwork for what we now know as the Smile Foundation.
Milky Lane is proud to partner with this wonderfilled non-profit organisation in their quest to reach more children and help them smile. Through this partnership, the lives of children living with facial anomalies as well as physical challenges will be transformed for the better.
